Cape Fear Valley Health System
GMK has been working for Cape Fear Valley Health System in an indefinite delivery relationship for 20+ years. Representative projects include: ED renovations, cyber knife modality to the cancer center, patient tower renovations (north and south towers), ED radiology upgrades, planning services for the cancer center and outpatient radiology, Express Care relocation, clinical services space master planning, women’s services relocation, security upgrades to existing ED, replacement of linear accelerator and design of new space in cancer center, new physician entrance canopy, pre-labor beds, a satellite nursery, GI equipment room and millwork, patient room conversions, a healing garden, a seven-bed PICU, MOB/physician office upgrades, and more.
In 2012, GMK provided architectural design and construction for the multi-million-dollar expansion and renovation of the existing Cancer Treatment Center to house the health system’s first CyberKnife® robotic surgery system. This CyberKnife® System – the world’s first and only robotic radiosurgery system – provides a non-surgical and pain-free alternative for treating surgically complicated or inoperable tumors. The 2,528-SF addition and 1,745-SF renovation has allowed the Health System to offer the southeastern area of North Carolina state-of-the-art cancer treatment on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Key elements of GMK’s design for the facility include architectural details that create a contemplative natural environment to promote patient relaxation and healing. The design further ties into and complements the existing facility while also focusing on heightened energy efficiency and meeting the facility's complex technical and safety requirements.
